Kratom and Driving: Is It Legal to Drive Under the Influence?

In this article, we will discuss how kratom use can affect driving, if it can affect us, and how this situation is viewed in relation to current laws. So let's take a look at today's topic, which is kratom and driving.

Kratom aka Mitragyna speciosa

Mitragyna speciosa is the Latin name for kratom. It is a tropical tree found in Southeast Asian countries. Other names for this evergreen tree include, for example, thang, biak, thom or kakuam. This plant occurs in different strains, which we distinguish primarily based on the content of alkaloids contained in it. The two main alkaloids (mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine) result in analgesic, antipsychotic and, for example, sedative effects.

The very effects of kratom depend primarily on the amount used. At a small dose, stimulating effects and a surge of energy occur, on the other hand, at high doses, attenuation or sedation occurs. Other anecdotal evidence (such as user experience) states that kratom can help, for example, with diabetes, high blood pressure and other physical or psychological conditions. However, this is unsubstantiated information that needs to be forwarded to further studies. Therefore, they cannot be considered a collection coin.

Mitragyna speciosa leaves can be consumed in many different forms. It is often used in powder form in the Western world, extract or tablets. In contrast, in indigenous countries, the leaves are most commonly smoked, chewed or made into tea. However, despite significant differences in the method of consumption, the effects remain the same.

How does kratom affect us while driving?

This is a very controversial question that cannot be answered directly. The answer is unclear, mainly because kratom affects each person differently, and both the strength of the effects and the effect that is specifically manifested on us are different. Some people report that it helps them concentrate, while others report that their abilities deteriorate. Many factors can also affect the consumption of kratom, let's give examples:

• the kratom strain we will use
• how our body reacts to it
• the dose we apply
• other substances we use
• how often do we use kratom

In addition, it is known that taking a high dose of kratom can impair our cognitive functions and significantly increase reaction time. Also, according to some sources, blurred vision can appear, which also greatly impairs the ability to drive. A small dose of Mitragyna speciosa should prevent these problems.

It is important to think about whether it is safe for us to get behind the wheel after using it. So we should be sure how our body reacts to the substance. If we take a micro dose of kratom, it should have the same effect as coffee or an energy drink. However, the alkaloid content of kratom from different vendors can vary significantly. Unlike an energy drink, you never know exactly the exact composition of the active ingredients. For this reason, we definitely do not recommend anyone to drive under the influence of kratom!

Is driving under the influence of kratom legal?

As far as legislation is concerned, kratom is not on the list of prohibited substances, so we should not be subject to any penalties, just like after consuming a stimulant drink with caffeine. This is the theoretical level of the question, however, as we stated above, we do not recommend such behavior to anyone.

Tests for drugs and kratom

We will also stop at drug tests. Either the employer or the police can ask us to take a drug test. In the vast majority of cases, saliva tests are used, but they do not detect the alkaloids of the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. However, with police tests, we can get into a state of "false positive" results. In this case, we are waiting for a blood test, during which, however, alkaloids may not appear either, since blood tests primarily focus on substances that are found precisely in the aforementioned classic tests for the presence of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Even so, we should be careful, as some employers have kratom tests available that are very accurate and can detect the presence of kratom very well. These tests are mostly available to employers in industries where occupational safety is very important, as psychoactive compounds can affect it. Therefore, kratom is not just an ordinary stimulant, but at the same time also a psychoactive substance, you need to remember that.

Kratom and Driving: Is It Safe?

While driving while under the influence of kratom is not illegal or classified as a criminal offense, there is still a risk that Mitragyna speciosa extract can affect our perception and response abilities. Due to the strong stimulant effects, the ride can also be somewhat aggressive and distracted. For these and other reasons listed here, we do not expressly recommend that anyone attempt to drive under the influence of kratom.
