Kratom and Alcohol: Can We Take Them Together?

What happens when we ingest kratom in combination with alcohol? This question has certainly been asked by more than one of you, so we would like to help you find the answer. Many people consider alcohol to be a completely harmless substance, so they are not afraid to combine it with stimulants with a high caffeine content or kratom. However, this brings considerable risks, which we should not underestimate in any case!

As the number of kratom users continues to increase worldwide, it is more than appropriate for us to inform our readers about its effects in combination with other widely used substances, such as, for example, alcohol, which is very popular in the Czech Republic. Therefore, in today's article we will focus on the combination of kratom with alcohol, which may seem like a good idea for energetic entertainment at wild parties.

If we want to experiment with certain substances, we should be sufficiently informed about their effects and possible interaction. So let's dive into important education!

Kratom

The most common name in Thailand and in the Western world is kratom. However, professional terminology speaks of Mitragyna speciosa. This tree comes from Southeast Asia and its leaves contain very effective alkaloids. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine can help us with a broken psyche, lack of energy or, for example, with pain relief. Among the natives of Borneo and the surrounding islands, kratom has been used for centuries primarily for its stimulant and sedative effects. In this area, the leaves are most often chewed or smoked. In addition, kratom tea is also prepared from them. Mitragyna speciosa comes to us mainly in the form of powder or filled tablets.

Alcohol

The basis of well-known alcoholic beverages is the compound ethanol, which is a colorless, easily flammable substance. It is a narcotic psychoactive substance that is legal and socially accepted in our country. However, it is also associated with abundant occurrence dependencies on alcohol (alcoholism), which many users refuse to admit. Small doses of alcohol usually have a euphoric effect on us. At higher doses, ethanol can directly affect our central nervous system (CNS). In this case, its effects are depressing, alcohol poisoning can cause unconsciousness and, in some cases, even endanger life. In the brain, alcohol acts on various receptors (dopamine, serotonin, GABA), which is why addiction to it builds up very quickly. 

The effects of kratom

Kratom is very often used for its energizing, stimulating and therapeutic effects. It can interact with the CNS and can be psychoactive in large doses. In most cases, users seek it mainly for these effects:

• improves mood
• stimulates and supports concentration
• helps with pain
• can help in the treatment of inflammation
• possible help with anxiety and depression
• can help with opioid addiction 

This is only a small list of the potential positive effects of this substance. According to many reviewers, the number is significantly higher, but most of them are not clinically supported, so it is necessary to subject Mitragyna speciosa leaf powder to further research in order to confirm or refute them.

Effects of alcohol

As we mentioned in the very introduction; most people consider alcohol to be a completely safe and harmless substance. However, ethanol can affect our body in many different ways. Most of us will experience a hangover and associated headache several times in our lives, but long-term and frequent alcohol consumption also presents many more serious problems.

Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can start to affect us significantly, both physically and psychologically. In most cases, the short-term effects of alcohol are not very serious. In smaller amounts, alcohol can temporarily induce pleasant feelings.

But let's take a closer look at some of its long-term effects on the body:

• insomnia
• memory problems 
• inability to concentrate
• increased anxiety
• liver damage
• inflammation of the pancreas
• unstable blood sugar
• disturbance of CNS functions

Kratom combined with alcohol

The effects of kratom may encourage some adventurers to experience it in the combination with alcohol. But is it really a good idea? What is the answer to the main question of this article? If you are one of those who believe that using kratom and alcohol together can create some form of beneficial symbiosis for the body, you are wrong. It's the exact opposite!

The effects of using these two substances at the same time have not yet been clinically confirmed, so we will have to rely on the knowledge of each substance separately. Kratom is used in smaller doses as a stimulant and helps with psychological problems and stress. Alcohol, on the other hand, causes depression due to its effects on the CNS. This means that Mitragyna speciosa and ethanol are at absolute opposites.

The stimulant effects of kratom can reduce the perceived effects of alcohol, which can be very dangerous. In the case of taking a higher dose of kratom, we can expect strong sedative effects, which, on the other hand, can intensify the effects of alcohol. How can our body react to the administration of both substances at the same time? And what danger do we face?

In the majority of observed cases, users have reached an overdose-like state after ingesting these two substances at the same time. Several tragic deaths have even been associated with this, but it was a long-term and significantly excessive use of alcohol, kratom and, in most cases, heroin (a semi-synthetic opioid drug). Of course, you are not at risk of anything like that when using kratom alone, but you need to maintain a healthy respect and, if possible, not mix kratom with any other substances.

If we look at the most common reactions of Mitragyna speciosa and alcohol in the body, we will find the following side effects:

• drowsiness
• high blood pressure
• loss of muscle coordination
• short-term memory lapses
• seizures
• subsequent intensified withdrawal symptoms

Correct use of Mitragyna speciosa

Mitragyna speciosa is a very good servant, but a bad master, as you all probably already know. To achieve beneficial effects and prevent addiction, it is ideal to dose a smaller amount of powder. A suitable starting dose for inexperienced kratomists is somewhere between 1 and 4 grams. With this dosage, we achieve ideal stimulating effects. It also depends on the type of kratom, because its different "colors" (red, gold, white, green) have different effects.

Long-term (especially daily) consumption of Mitragyna speciosa can lead to addiction, so we definitely recommend monitoring the frequency and amount of dosage from the very beginning to avoid this risk.

Kratom and alcohol at the same time is simply not a good idea!

The psychoactive character of both substances is the main reason why their mutual combination represents a potential health risks. Since both kratom and alcohol can alter the user's state of consciousness, it is highly likely that when they are combined, there will be a significant increase in psychotropic effects, which can be very dangerous.

Although there is basically no research on the topic of kratom and alcohol, we, like many health professionals, do not recommend their simultaneous use in any way! In addition to the above examples of negative effects, this "mix" can also cause other damages, about which we do not yet have information.
