Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC): What about its origin and effects
So far it was possible HHC considered a legal alternative to the prohibited THC. However, that is about to change! What are its real effects and what HHC products are there? Is hexahydrocannabinol or THC stronger? You can find the answers in this article.
Hexahydrocannabinol, better known by the abbreviation HHC, is a cannabinoid that was discovered many decades ago, but it was only thanks to modern chemical methods that it came to the forefront of public interest. Its character, legal status, origin, available forms and especially effects therefore deserve a more thorough analysis.
Where did HHC come from?
Hexahydrocannabinol was first synthesized in the hemp plant in the 20s by the American chemist Roger Adams. The process he used to do this is called hydrogenation, and the starting compound was the well-known THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis. The hydrogenation process very simply involves adding hydrogen to THC, which changes its molecular structure and creates HHC. Similarly, it can be obtained from CBD.
HHC is often referred to as a semi-synthetic cannabinoid because, although it occurs naturally in cannabis, it is present in trace amounts. Its production therefore requires chemical intervention in the form of the aforementioned hydrogenation. So if someone claims to sell it to you HHC products they come from a plant, they are 99.9% not telling the truth.
Is HHC legal?
The legal status of HHC in Europe is complex and varies from country to country. It could be said that it is most often found in the gray area. Some states have moved to ban it, however, this only leads to a transition to the black market, and in addition, other semi-synthetic cannabinoids are constantly appearing on the market. For example, in France, which banned hexahydrocannabinol six months ago, even more potent substances such as THCP etc.
In this regard, the Czech Republic is trying to follow a golden middle path and come up with strict legislation that would keep HHC products on the market, but at the same time prevent their spread among minors. At the moment, however, the bill is stuck in the comment process, and no one knows at this point how it will end up.
Current info: The Czech government has decided to include HHC on the list of prohibited substances! Together with THC-P HHC-O acetate is also headed for the blacklist. The ban should apply temporarily until January 1.1. 2025.
HHC and its effects
Users report that the effects of HHC are similar to those of THC, including feelings of relaxation, euphoria, and altered perception. However, hexahydrocannabinol is generally considered a less potent substance compared to THC. Because individual responses to hexahydrocannabinol may vary, caution is advised, especially given the limited research on its long-term effects.
Long-term effects and studies
Research into the long-term effects of HHC is still in its early stages. Since this is a relatively new compound, it stands to reason that the available studies on the effects of long-term use are either non-existent or very limited. Another problematic point is the fact that in the gray zone no one checks the content of products, possible residues of various solvents, heavy metals and other potentially health-threatening substances. If you are using hexahydrocannabinol, try to only buy from sources you trust 100% to be as sure as possible that HHC products do not contain these unwanted substances.
On the other hand, the first researches on cells and animals indicate that HHC, like other natural cannabinoids, may have potential health benefits, but even in this area we are still several years away from the first relevant results of clinical studies.
HHC products on the market
Hexahydrocannabinol aka HHC is sold in many different forms, the most common of which are the following:
- HHC pen and cartridges: They offer rapid onset of effects thanks to inhalation.
- Edibles: Edible snacks containing HHC provide longer-lasting effects, but with a slower onset and greater risk of overdose.
- HHC oil and drops: They are used for sublingual application and are a sort of intermediate stage between inhalation and edibles.
- Atopic preparations: Hexahydrocannabinol creams and balms are intended for topical relief, but their effectiveness requires further research. Currently, this form is practically not sold, as it can cause unwanted intoxication in addition to local relief.
A few final words
HHC represents an interesting compound at the interface between natural and synthetic cannabinoids. It is produced by hydrogenating cannabinoids, which means that its production requires human intervention. However, it offers us a unique set of effects and challenges. The legal status of HHC in Europe is variable, reflecting the dynamics of legislation in the field of natural cannabis as well.
As interest in hexahydrocannabinol grows, so does the need for comprehensive research, especially with regard to long-term health effects. Therefore, potential users should approach HHC with utmost caution.
