Cannabinoids CBD and CBG for bone healing? We know more!

You surely already know that cannabinoids such as CBD, CBN and CBG have been widely used in recent years to alleviate various types of pain, whether chronic or as an alternative to drugs for acute pain. Studies are still ongoing on this topic, trying to determine exactly how this process works in our body. Especially in order to find out how we can profit from it as much as possible. Research team from Penn State College of Medicine recently studied the effect of the hemp compounds CBD and CBG for pain in bone fractures. The analgesic effect of cannabis is a relatively well-known phenomenon. More surprising, however, was that, apart from this effect, the researchers also noted an improvement in bone healing itself, which could result in a breakthrough discovery of recent times!

So let's take a closer look at this unexpected discovery!

Treatment of fractures with the help of CBD?

According to statistics, less than 200 million people around the world suffer from some kind of fracture every year. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are currently used for pain associated with bone healing. These drugs include, for example, Aspirin or Ibuprofen, but their effects are not ideal in all aspects of fracture healing. These drugs are anti-inflammatory, and the elimination of inflammation in our body is one of the most important factors in the healing process. As part of the experiment, the scientists tried to test a natural alternative in the form of cannabis, specifically with the help of the cannabinoids CBD and CBG. The researchers conducted a laboratory study on mice, as these specific medicinal effects of CBD are still not part of official medical procedures.

CBD pain study progress

Dr. Elbarbary's team primarily tried to demonstrate the analgesic effects of the aforementioned cannabinoids on pain relief in mice. As part of this part of the research, it was found that pain relief with the help of legally available cannabinoids is comparable to drugs from the NSA group. However, it was a huge surprise when the research team discovered that the natural substances CBD and CBG directly aid in the fracture healing process! The researchers investigated this serendipitous discovery using immunofluorescence microscopy and biomechanical testing, which closely monitored bone density, strength, and other determinants. 

Initially, cannabinoids were responsible for increasing periosteal bone progenitors, which over time develop into bone cells that aid in bone formation. Later, the hemp cannabinoids CBD and CBG speed up the absorption rate of minerals that are needed to grow new bone.

In future research projects, scientists will therefore try to focus on investigating specific processes in the different stages of fracture healing. The next step is a clinical study that could formulate specific advice on the use of hemp cannabinoids by adults in the treatment of fractures. This would once again expand the beneficial benefits of using legal cannabis and products made from it, such as CBD oil, drops, capsules, cosmetics, teas, food and other natural-based products.

Effects of cannabinoids from hemp

The hemp plant does not only contain CBD and/or THC, but also other substances, of which we know more than 100 so far! In the most basic division, we could divide them into two groups – psychoactive cannabinoids (e.g. THC and HHC) and non-narcotic therapeutic substances, including the CBD just mentioned, which is called cannabidiol in the technical term. Each element has its own specific effects, regardless of whether it is a psychoactive component or a relaxing cannabinoid. The medicinal effects of cannabis are constantly being researched, thanks to which we have the honor of getting to know the medicinal plant in a closer way.

Currently, hemp cannabinoids are used for example in the following way:

• to reduce stress
• suppression of anxiety and depression
• painkillers
• to improve immunity
• against migraine
• for sleep problems

These are just a few examples of the medicinal effects of cannabis. The actual list is indeed voluminous, as the therapeutic potential of cannabis flowers and tinctures is incredible! However, it is always important to follow through correct dosage, to avoid potential side effects. Another no less important factor for achieving the desired results is the purchase of hemp products itself.
