Where does the smell of cannabis come from? Scientists have made a breakthrough discovery!

Anyone who has personal experience with cannabis knows well that cannabis has a characteristic smell. The aroma of cannabis (regardless of whether it is CBD or HHC flowers) is very intense in the case of high-quality dry matter, which is why, for example, it stays in the room for a very long time. It is unmistakable, so it cannot be confused with anything. What is behind the distinctive business card of the cannabis plant in reality?

In today's article, we will focus on the unique smell of cannabis, which many of us love and cannot get enough of. However, it may not be pleasant for everyone. Among other things, one of the reasons why cannabis users do not remain anonymous is because the aroma is so strong that it can smell the whole apartment, clothes, car and in short everything it comes into contact with. So let's explain where it comes from, what causes it and whether we can somehow eliminate it.

Characteristic smell of cannabis and marijuana

As you probably already know, hemp contains many cannabinoids, of which more than 100 have been discovered to date. In addition, hemp also contains terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds that influence effects, aroma and other aspects. Previously, scientists attributed this easy-to-remember whiff to terpenes, such as mycerin, which is found in hops and mango, or caryophyllene, which is found in cinnamon or black pepper, for example. In 2021, however, research was conducted in which scientists reached completely different results. 

As part of research under the auspices of Abstrax Tech, scientists have discovered that cannabis also contains volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). We can associate these compounds, for example, with the smell of a person's mouth, as they are created during the process when bacteria break down food. Sulfur compounds also play a role in other plants with a distinct smell and taste. Take, for example, durian or the more familiar garlic and hops. In some Southeast Asian countries, it is forbidden to carry durian in public transport, precisely because of its pungent smell. Even in small concentrations, VSCs can have a very strong aroma, which is much more pronounced than is the case with terpenes. 

Sulfuric compounds were discovered after gas chromatography was used to investigate cannabis. This is a type of separation method that separates components of the sample that can be transferred to the gas phase without decomposition. During this investigation, substances were even found in hemp that had not been discovered in any other plant before!

Not only cannabis terpenes, but also sulfur compounds

VSCs, as they are called according to the English "volatile sulfur compounds", are also contained, as we have already mentioned, in garlic. It contains diallyl disulfide, which scientists associate with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant or anti-cancer processes in our body. It is therefore highly probable that, due to their very similar structure, the VSC substances contained in cannabis can also result in therapeutic effects similar to those of garlic. However, for now, these are only assumptions that arise from current knowledge. 

The loved and hated smell of cannabis

Some people don't mind, others seek her out, and others "can't stand her". All these claims about the specific smell of cannabis are very common. In one of the American states, a new job position was even created, where a person checks complaints about this characteristic odor.

According to current findings, we know that after just one week of storage, the concentration of VSC begins to drop significantly. This process can also be significantly affected by oxidation, which is the reason why it is important to take care of the proper storage of CBD and HHC flowers, or marijuana.

And how to suppress the unmistakable scent of flowers?

If you use cannabis indoors, it is recommended to ventilate as much as possible, use incense sticks or get an air purifier. It is best to use airtight containers for storage, which will not only prevent the spread of the cannabis aroma, but also increase the "shelf life" period for which it will remain dry matter fresh. An alternative option is also the use of a vape pen and cartridge, which do not produce any smell, thanks to which they ensure complete anonymity and discretion.
