What does 420 mean? What does it have to do with April 20 and what do we celebrate on this day?

Every year on April 20, thousands of people around the world gather to celebrate the use of marijuana. In states where the use of THC is prohibited, on this very day they hold meetings for legalization and create campaigns for this day. However, why was this date chosen and how is it used? marijuana connected?

For decades, the number 420 has been inseparable with the use of cannabis. In the age of social networks, the number 420 can be found in many posts that are associated with marijuana. But why is that so? Who was behind the creation of this designation and what does this number actually hide?

What does 420 mean?

As we already mentioned, on April 20th, meetings are held worldwide to support marijuana. In the US format, this date is recorded as "4/20". Nowadays, it is mainly associated with the date, but we can very often meet people who use 420 for 16:20 p.m. This possibility is fully related to the creation of the 420 itself in the early 70s of the 20th century. 

How did it all start?

Five California schoolboys - Steve Capper, Mark Gravich, Jeffrey Noel, Dave Reddix and Larry Schwartz - are mostly credited with this specific designation. In 1971, these high school students in San Rafael decided to create a secret label to inform them that they would meet for a joint later that day. 

Whenever they met at the choba and one of them said "420", they all knew to meet at 16:20pm behind the school. They thus protected themselves from teachers who had no idea what they were talking about and therefore could not reveal them. Even their parents didn't know about it, since none of them told any of their close adult circle about this designation. 

At school they were called "Waldos", derived from a wall that was on their school grounds near a statue of the 19th century scientist Louis Pasteur. 

How is 4/20 celebrated worldwide?

So originally this label comes from the USA, but after years this label has become globally known information. In addition to the widespread use of cannabis, the aforementioned meetings of cannabis supporters are also held on this day. 

What events are taking place on 4/20?

The biggest events are organized for example in London, specifically in Hyde Park, where local residents are protesting the current laws that apply to the possession and use of cannabis in the United Kingdom. 

In the USA, these events are also held on a large scale, most of them are organized in the states of Colorado, California, Michigan and Florida. So the date of April 20 is a world famous day which is associated precisely with the use of marijuana.
