What CBD does not understand or Beware of interactions!
Although CBD has practically no side effects in the recommended dosage, it is necessary to pay extra attention to the potential interaction with simultaneously used prescription drugs.
While its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years and CBD is gaining more and more supporters, there is still not enough attention paid to how it works in combination with other substances, especially with frequently used drugs. Therefore, let's look at this issue together in order to avoid interaction as much as possible.
Interaction is not the same as side effects
Who was going to argue that it doesn't have CBD after all according to the verified ones resources practically no or only very mild side effects, he should realize that we talk about side effects as an effect that may (or may not) occur when using the given substance as such, i.e. independently. Interaction or interaction of two or more substances it's a different matter.
CBD and cytochromes
Cytochromes are enzymes that work with foreign substances in the body and help eliminate them. However, the activity of an enzyme that metabolizes more than half of commonly prescribed drugs is reduced by CBD. As a result, the medicines cannot be used adequately. At the same time, the disruption of the effect of the drug can consist in slowing down its metabolism, so there is a risk of an increase in the level of the active substance in the body, although you comply with the prescribed dosage. It is also possible that the metabolism of some drugs is accelerated, so on the contrary, an adequate level of the active substance is not present in the body for a long enough time and the therapy loses its effectiveness.
The Forbidden Grapefruit Rule
No, you don't need a degree in pharmacy to learn a bit about this challenging subject. Remember the basic rule of the so-called forbidden grapefruit. This means that if you are taking medications that at the same time state in the package leaflet that you must not eat grapefruits or drink grapefruit juice with them, then these are medications that are not good to combine with oral CBD products. This interaction does not apply to topically applied products that do not pass through the digestive tract.
Another inappropriate combination
Sedatives: In combination with CBD, their effect can be enhanced and the respiratory rate slowed down.
Valproate: it is a drug for epilepsy or bipolar disorder, the breakdown of which makes our liver busy. In combination with CBD, the load increases, therefore the use of these two substances at the same time is not recommended.
Lithium: If we take lithium, we have an increased level of it in the body. With simultaneous use together with CBD, its unwanted side effects can be amplified.
Warfarin: CBD can increase the level of warfarin and thereby increase the risk of bleeding, so it is either necessary to reduce the dose of the drug if you want to use CBD, or not to combine these substances with each other at all.
Citalopram: this is a widely used one an antidepressant whose potential interaction with CBD was addressed in this study, for example. According to her results, CBD can slow down the metabolism of citalopram in the body, causing levels to rise and unwanted side effects.
caffeine: CBD can slow down the metabolism of caffeine, increasing its levels and causing a number of unpleasant effects in more sensitive individuals. In the vast majority of cases, however, the combination of caffeine and CBD does not cause users any problems at all.
Consult your doctor about using CBD or HHC
If you regularly take any prescription drugs, or nutritional supplements or over-the-counter drugs, it certainly makes sense to consult with a doctor or pharmacist about the possibility of combining them with CBD / HHC products. Especially with chronic patients, professional supervision is absolutely necessary and interactions should be avoided if possible, as the risks can be quite serious in some cases.
