You would find endocannabinoids in the bodies of all vertebrates. With exaggeration, we could say that our organism is like a miniature cannabis farm that constantly produces small amounts of these substances. So it's not surprising that CBD or THC can play a vital role in human health. Scientists are investigating how they interact with the EKS and are coming up with new facts all the time.

While THC was discovered as early as 1964, endocannabinoids only in 1992. Since then, scientists have discovered that these substances maintain balance in the body and prevent the occurrence of serious diseases, from neurodegenerative and cardiovascular to inflammatory. Scientists are also focusing on what the benefit of endocannabinoids is in the occurrence and treatment of cancer.

The three pillars of EKS: Endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes

But let's take a look at what the endocannabinoid system is. Its main role is to maintain the internal balance of the organism. It acts on various functions in the body, mainly through the nervous and hormonal system. EKS consists of three main components: Endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. What do we know about them?

Endocannabinoids: These substances produced in our bodies affect the function of cells. Among the most important are anandamide and 2-AG, which bind to receptors.

Receptors: They are found on the surface of cells throughout the body and trap endocannabinoids. In connection with cannabis, the CB1 (in the central nervous system) and CB2 (in the peripheral nervous system and immune system) receptors are most often discussed.

enzymes: These enzymes create and break down endocannabinoids to keep their numbers in balance in the body.

Why aren't we constantly in a "high" state like after consuming cannabis?

The substance THC activates CB1 receptors in the brain and causes a psychoactive effect. In contrast, the cannabinoid CBD does not activate either CB1 or CB2 receptors. It would seem that thanks to our own production of endocannabinoids, we should always be in a "high" state, like after smoking a marijuana cigarette. However, the body produces endocannabinoids in smaller amounts and enzymes break them down once they have completed their cellular functions.

THC as a replacement for endocannabinoids?

Endocannabinoids influence many functions in the body, such as sleep, mood, appetite, memory, pain perception, immune system and fertility. Hemp and its THC component can compensate for the lack of endocannabinoids.

Scientists have discovered one interesting thing; there may be less endocannabinoid production in the bodies of patients with chronic pain. After using marijuana, these patients reported pain relief, indirectly confirming that THC can balance lower endocannabinoid production and function.

EKS: How does it affect our health?

Research suggests that EKS can help with a number of physiological processes: from appetite stimulation and blood pressure regulation, to pain perception and memory, to metabolism, immune responses, inflammation and energy deficiency. It even appears that it could prevent the development of Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

EKS is a mystery of the human body

Scientists have not yet deciphered the exact role of cannabinoids in the human body. All the more, the cannabinoids from hemp arouse the interest of researchers and doctors themselves. EKS appears to act as a regulator of the entire body. It functions as an imaginary bridge between brain activity and physical health and thus influences the onset and course of diseases. The bad news is that this complexity has so far made it difficult to target the endocannabinoid system for the treatment of specific diseases.
