THC vs. THC-P: How are these psychoactive substances different?

A cannabis derivative known by its acronym THC-P it is said to be many times stronger than traditional THC. There are only a few days left when it is still legal and freely available. A government ban is coming soon, relegating HHC and other substances to the blacklist of illegal substances!

THC vs. THCP: two psychoactive substances in cannabis that differ in several ways. In this article, we will walk you through the differences between these cannabinoids. How does the Czech legislation view them, what are their demonstrable effects and what is their concentration in cannabis? Read on to learn more!

Where do we find THC and THC-P?

The cannabinoid THC is a chemical compound that scientists discovered in hemp in the past. Among other things, they discovered that THC acts on the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This system, made up of endocannabinoids and their cannabinoid receptors, affects bodily functions: from immune cells, organs and connective tissues to the brain. What exactly are endocannabinoids? Simply put, we could say that these are substances that the body produces itself. Their task is to maintain a stable internal environment in the body and protect it from external influences. The cannabinoid THC-P was first discovered in cannabis. However, the amount of this substance in plants is so negligible that it is produced synthetically. 

Plant phytocannabinoids

Did you know that these substances can also be found in plants? In this case, we are talking about phytocannabinoids, which act as endocannabinoids and stimulate cannabinoid receptors in the body. The best-known cannabinoids include THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol) and CBN (cannabinol). Researchers have isolated most of the phytocannabinoids from hemp and are investigating their health benefits. An interesting fact is that non-psychoactive cannabinoids are also found in other plants, for example in the well-known herb echinacea purpura (purple coneflower).

THC vs THC-P differs not only in chemical structure!

The difference between the cannabinoids THC and THCP it is also evident in the chemical structure. The chemical structure of THCP is similar to THC, but differs in the alkyl side chain. While THC contains only five carbon atoms, THC-P has seven carbon atoms. This difference means that THCP has an increased binding affinity to CB1 receptors in the brain, which can lead to potentially stronger psychoactive effects. According to Italian researchers, THCP binds to CB1 endocannabinoid receptors up to 33 times more strongly than delta-9 THC.

Concentration in the organic form of the cannabis plant

As we mentioned before, cannabinoids THC and THCP occur naturally in cannabis, but their concentrations vary significantly:

• THC: The concentration ranges from 25 to 35% in marijuana and only 0,3% in hemp.
• THCP: The concentration is less than 0,1%.

Effects of THC-P vs THC

Italians researchers suggest in initial 2019 study that THCP could have stronger effects than standard THC. It probably produces effects similar to delta-9 THC, but with greater intensity. The researchers further report that THCP could effectively bind to cannabinoid receptors in the body, which could bring new possibilities not only for recreational use but also for medical purposes in the future. However, scientists are at the beginning of the journey in this area. 

Verified information from scientific research is still lacking

On the other hand, the cannabinoid THCP could potentially have stronger side effects compared to THC, such as dry mouth, anxiety or paranoia. In this regard, the substance THC has a head start, as scientists have already conducted many clinical studies and investigated possible therapeutic effects. THC vs THC-P and Legislation

According to Czech legislation, THC is a prohibited substance - with the exception of medicinal cannabis available on prescription. In all other cases, it is considered an illegal drug, the possession or distribution of which can result in many years behind bars. Unfortunately, the legal regulations of our country classify high-potency cannabis (marijuana) as highly dangerous, so it belongs to the same group as heroin or meth.

THC-P goes on the list of prohibited substances!

A cannabis derivative called THC-P is still fully legal these days. However, this will soon change, because the government approved the inclusion of HHC, HHC-O and THC-P in the list of addictive substances. The ban should take legal effect on March 1, 2024 at the earliest. It is awaiting ratification by the European Commission. It is approved for a temporary period until January 1.1. 2025. By then, the law on so-called psychomodulating substances should enter into force, where kratom and CBD should also be included. So we can only believe that it will actually be the case.

Will he show up on a drug test?!

Commonly used drug tests can detect the substance THC, while THC-P is a relatively new compound. It is therefore unclear whether current drug tests would be able to detect it. However, we cannot overlook the fact that both cannabinoids have a very similar structure. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that you could test positive for THC after taking THCP. If we're being honest, we have to say for us that he will most likely fail the drug test.
