Hemp with CBD as a storehouse of phytocannabinoids for your skin
Hemp contains more than 500 biologically active components, the most important of which are phytocannabinoids. These substances affect your endocannabinoid system, and since the skin has cannabinoid-sensitive receptors, they interact. Cannabinoids thus affect the functions of the skin and relieve inflammation, itching and irritation.
More and more people are interested in how cannabis can help them in the treatment of skin problems. Hemp extract in ointments and creams could be an interesting alternative to corticosteroid ointments for the treatment of specific skin problems.
How does hemp with CBD work on skin problems?
Research suggests that hemp extract has several benefits for the skin. It suppresses inflammation, relieves itching in eczema and allergies, relieves pain, promotes wound healing, smoothes scars and slows the growth of abnormal cells. How exactly does it work?
1. Acne and rosacea
Many people suffer from acne and rosacea. The main cause of acne breakouts is excessive sebum production and inflammation of the sebaceous glands. Cannabinoids in hemp, whether in the form of CBD or hemp seed extract, can be effective in treating both acne and rosacea. They have been shown to reduce sebum production and reduce skin inflammation, thus suppressing the symptoms of these skin problems.
One study looked at how a cream with 3% hemp seed extract worked. Research participants applied it to their skin twice a day for 2 weeks. The research found that the cream was effective on inflammation and sebum, which brings hope to people with acne and rosacea.
2. Alopecia, hirsutism and hypertrichosis
Alopecia is manifested by the loss of hair and body hair. Hirsutism affects women with excessive hair growth in places where only fine and light hairs are normally found. Hypertrichosis is manifested by the growth of hair anywhere on the body, either from birth or throughout life.
Given that cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, it is not surprising that some experts claim that disturbances in the regulation of the cannabinoid system may contribute to the development of alopecia.
Research shows that substances that activate the CB1 receptor can help treat hirsutism and hypertrichosis. Other studies point out that CB1 receptor activators can help treat alopecia.
3. Skin tumors
Benign skin tumors, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are among the most common forms of cancer. Cannabinoids contained in cannabis may be beneficial in the treatment of these tumors.
Research suggests that cannabinoids can slow the growth of cancer cells and stop them from spreading. They are supposed to achieve this by stimulating apoptosis (spontaneous death) of cells, blocking the formation of new blood vessels in the tumor and influencing the cell cycle. Studies also reveal that cannabinoids may have a similar effect on another type of skin cancer – melanoma.
4. Melanocytes and pigmentation disorders
The endocannabinoid system has an unmistakable role in the regulation of skin cells (melanocytes). These cells produce melanin – the pigment that determines skin color. Research suggests that higher levels of endocannabinoids can lead to the natural death of melanocytes. This can result in lightening of skin pigmentation. Conversely, a lower concentration of endocannabinoids can stimulate melanin production and lead to darker pigmentation.
Thus, endocannabinoids can have a dual effect on melanocytes: they can promote pigment formation or, conversely, induce cell death, which can be useful for the treatment of certain skin diseases such as melanomas or depigmentation disorders.
5. Wound healing
Cannabinoids affect processes in the skin and thus have an effect on cell growth, inflammatory processes in the skin and tissue regeneration. Studies in mice have shown that CB1 and CB2 receptors, which respond to cannabinoids, are activated in different types of immune system cells and fibroblasts during wound healing. These receptors contribute to cell migration, collagen production and anti-inflammatory response, thereby accelerating skin healing and smoothing scars.
6. Dermatitis
The hemp cannabinoid receptor CB1R in the skin has anti-inflammatory properties. Research has revealed that activation of this receptor may be beneficial in the treatment of acute and chronic skin inflammations such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and psoriasis.
7. Dry skin, disturbed skin barrier
Lipids in the outermost layer of the skin provide protection and hydration. Lack of lipids can lead to dry skin, impaired protective function and impaired wound healing. Studies in mice showed that the absence of the CB1 receptor in EKS slowed down the restoration of the skin barrier, while the absence of the CB2 receptor accelerated it. This indicates that CB2 receptor blockers could be promising in the treatment of dry skin and eczema.
8. Chronic pain
Research shows that hemp oil containing CBD can relieve chronic muscle and joint pain. Users also report improvement in chronic pain caused by cancer.
