Rhynchophylline – another of the alkaloids contained in kratom

In our exploration of the components of kratom, we will move a little further, more specifically to another of the alkaloids that can be found in the leaves of the tree Mitragyna speciosa. It is not a well-known alkaloid, but rhynchophylline in kratom also plays a very important role, which we will cover in this article. 

We would like to introduce you to another of the several dozen alkaloids that together make up the irreplaceable composition of the alkaloid profile of kratom. It is their percentage contents and ratios of individual substances that are responsible for the unique effects that kratom can provide to users.

What is rhynchophyllin?

It is an alkaloid that scientists have discovered, in addition to the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, in several other, but no less specific, plants. However, the greatest knowledge about it comes from studies that focus on the effects of kratom, which came to Europe and the USA from the original Southeast Asia. 

Rhynchofylline belongs to a large family of alkaloids contained in the presses of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, currently scientists have described more than 40 of them. Chemically, it is most similar to mitragynine, which occupies the first place among all alkaloids in the content of kratom. However, according to current research, its effects are diametrically different from mitragynine. 

Functions of rhynchophylline in kratom

Let us now discuss together the basic functions of this alkaloid.

Regulation of blood pressure

According to the latest findings, one of the really essential properties is help in regulating blood pressure, which some can types of kratom increase. Research has shown that rhynchophylline has vasodilating properties, meaning it can help widen blood vessels and thereby lower blood pressure. This is a very important finding and one of its main potential benefits. 

Muscle relaxation

Other effects of this alkaloid can be observed on the muscles, where it is most likely able to help overall muscle relaxation. This adds to the overall relaxing and soothing properties this substance offers. However, according to current information, its effects are milder, so excessive sedation does not occur when using it.

It is also important to remember that this information comes mostly from pre-clinical research or user experience, and the definitive information must wait for validated clinical studies. 

Kratom strain variability

Thanks to the different contents of alkaloids, we can observe the division of kratom according to the color of its veins. The specific alkaloid profile offers us specific properties and effects. It is no different in the case of rhynchophylline, where we expect its higher content mainly in red kratom, which is primarily good for relaxation and helps with sleep difficulties. 

Potential benefits of kratom

As we mentioned before, its main advantages include its likely ability to manipulate blood pressure and induce a feeling of relaxation without over-sedation due to its milder effects. Even so, it should be noted that research into kratom and its alkaloids is still "in its infancy", we still have to wait for larger clinical studies on these topics. Until then, it cannot even be determined whether kratom is safe to use or not. However, with kratom we should always follow the principle that "less is sometimes more" and contact our treating physician in case of any problem.
