Doctors have recognized the healing power of cannabis with THC and CBD

Doctors have been able to prescribe medical cannabis since 2014. It is obtained by drying the flowers of the female plants Cannabis sativa L. and Cannabis indica L., which undergo strict controls and meet demanding standards for medicinal products. Cannabis thus serves as a supportive or complementary treatment that helps alleviate the symptoms accompanying serious diseases.

What legislation governs medical cannabis with THC?

Cannabis for medicinal purposes is subject to strict regulations. This area is governed by the Act on Addictive Substances (167/1998 Coll.) and the Decree on Setting the Conditions for the Prescribing, Preparation, Distribution, Dispensing and Use of Individually Prepared Medicinal Products Containing Cannabis for Medical Use (236/2015 Coll.).

What is the proportion of THC and CBD in medical cannabis?

Hemp contains a wide range of active substances, the best known of which is THC (Δ-9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). These substances occur in different concentrations, which vary according to the variety. THC ranges from 0,3% to 21%, while CBD can range from 0,1% to 19%.

How does medical cannabis get to the Czech Republic?

1. Import from abroad

The import permit is granted by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic - Inspectorate of Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances. Hemp must meet strict requirements for the quality and content of active substances. The price is not subject to regulation and is set by the manufacturer or distributor.

2. Cultivation in the Czech Republic

You can grow cannabis in the Czech Republic after a license has been granted by the State Institute for Drug Control (or the State Agency for Cannabis for Medicinal Use). The state institute supervises cultivation and distribution to pharmacies. The price depends on the lowest offer in the tender procedure according to the Public Procurement Act.
